This film was shot by Lana Wachowski herself, who is already to participate in the fifth one only as an executive producer. The script was written and directed by 49-year-old Drew Goddard, who started with the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Lost, before drawing attention to himself as a screenwriter of the sci-fi dramas Monster and The Martian. He most recently directed the thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, starring Jeff Bridges.

“Drew came up with a great idea,” explains Jesse Ehrman, head of production at Warner Bros. Studio. Motion Pictures. “In our opinion, he has come up with a great way to return to the world of The Matrix and pay tribute to what Lana and Lilly Wachowski started twenty-five years ago, but he will also bring a unique perspective to this saga based on how much he loves it and its characters.” suggests the manager.

The new screenwriter and director only notes that just as The Matrix changed cinema, it changed his life. “The refined art of Lana and Lilly Wachowski inspires me daily. I am extremely honored to be able to tell the story in their world,” adds Drew Goddard.

It was science fiction full of paranoid doubts about the nature of reality, full of references to the classics of the genre, but also religious and philosophical parallels, in a way demanding the attention of the audience.

The still relatively positively received films The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions from 2003 tried to build on the success of the film.

But then it took almost two decades before the fourth part was created. It has already received a mostly negative response from critics and viewers and was not even a commercial success, as Warner Bros. during the pandemic, like all its titles, it also offered for an extra charge in the HBO Max video library. The film, with a budget of $190 million, ended up grossing just $157.3 million in theaters worldwide, according to Variety.com.

When computer programmer Thomas Anderson, who goes by the hacker name Neo, discovers the truth, he joins the rebellion against the machines along with others who have been freed from the Matrix.
