Today, Jaybeam is one of the films that will ensure that the screen media will be a great motivator for revolutionary social change. On behalf of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), we commend Surya, the ‘Artist’ who has shown his social responsibility and progressive thinking by boldly volunteering to produce and act in this film, and TS Gnanavelu, the young director who has created it alive.
The tendency to use the powerful medium of film as a tool to easily convey new ideas for social change – revolutionary ideas – to the masses has been around for a long time in Tamil Nadu. It is a well-known fact that the Dravidian movement was the political movement in India that successfully manipulated the screen media to gradually liberate the people from the domination of the Sanathana reactionary ideology. In particular, Grandfather Anna and the Equality Periyar artist handled it brilliantly. They used great personalities like MR Radha, artist NSK and KR Ramasamy to spread rational ideas against superstitions related to caste and religion. MGR, Shivaji and others have been instrumental in bringing the Dravidian movement’s ideas of social reform to the masses.
The Tamil film industry, which had thus strayed in the direction of progressive social change, went backwards in the Middle Ages, completely disoriented commercially. In particular, it has been particularly painful that in the last few decades the Sanathana reactionary mob has been using it to spread caste-religious toxic ideas and that some political forces are promoting such degenerate tendencies.
‘Jaybeam’, which was staged in such a deplorable environment, has once again set the Tamil film industry on its head on the world stage. Has turned it into the most perfect progressive path. Among the tribes in Tamil Nadu, the lesser, the darker and the wilderness community are the ones who suffer the most from such lies. In particular, minorities are severely affected. Rajakannu, the victim of state atrocities in this case, is a minor. Had the character been portrayed as inferior in the screenplay as well, it would have been a bit comforting and a sense of social security for the offender as a whole.
However, the Jaybeam film very accurately exposes state terrorism against the poor. It is already a well-known fact that the Agaram Foundation provides assistance for the education of children from poor families. His concern and compassion for the poor is commendable. Also, it is commendable that actor Surya is a good role model for how a screen artist who has won the love and support of the public can use his fame and influence for the benefit of the common people.
