It was confirmed on the 30th that the Legal Ethics Council has begun a detailed investigation into lawyer Lee Jong-geun, the husband of former Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office Chief Prosecutor Park Eun-jung, who was elected first proportionally by the Homeland Innovation Party in the April 10 general election. The lawyer, who received a large amount of fees while defending a multi-level fraud case, sparked controversy over the special treatment of officials, decided to conduct an additional investigation after seeing that his explanation was insufficient.
According to Dong-A Ilbo’s coverage, it is understood that the Legal Ethics Council selected this lawyer as the subject of detailed investigation at its regular plenary committee meeting in the first half of the year on the 26th. The Legal Ethics Council is an organization that receives the details of appointments of lawyers who have retired from public office (transferred) based on the Attorney-at-Law Act and supervises whether there are any grounds for disciplinary action or misconduct.
The Legal Ethics Council has decided to assign an investigator to this lawyer as early as this week, conduct an investigation, and request attendance if necessary. If any misconduct is revealed after the investigation, the plan is to request disciplinary action from the Korean Bar Association or request an investigation by an investigative agency. The investigation committee members must complete the investigation and report the results by the regular plenary committee meeting held in the second half of the year in September or October.
This lawyer was subject to investigation after taking on approximately 130 cases in the second half of last year alone. He even resigned after it became known that he received 2.2 billion won while defending the ‘Hustem Korea’ case, which was suspected of multi-level fraud. It is reported that the Legal Ethics Council judged that the response submitted by this lawyer regarding the circumstances of his acceptance of the Hustem Korea case before the plenary committee was inadequate. It is known that this lawyer’s side effectively acknowledged in his response that he received the fee, saying, “I did not receive the contract illegally.” While working as a prosecutor, this lawyer received certification as a professional prosecutor (blue belt) in the field of multi-level cases.
It is said that this lawyer also submitted a response to the suspicion that he defended the person involved in the ‘V Global Coin’ case, who led the investigation while he was head of the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office’s criminal department. However, it was reported that the power committee believed that the circumstances of the appointment were not clearly explained and that this was also included in the detailed investigation.
Separately from the Legal Ethics Council’s investigation, the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office’s Crime Proceeds Recovery Department (Chief Prosecutor Lee Hee-chan) is conducting an investigation after receiving a complaint that this lawyer took unfair advantage while defending the Hustem Korea case.
