[세계테마기행] Tunisia travel part 4 – Tunisian capital, Tunis history tour

Tunisia, a land of colorful colors created by vast nature. I am grateful for the blessings of nature and am leaving to join the people who create their own colors.

A walk through the enchanting golden desert, Douz and Sahara Desert. Sparks Sidi Bouside, which falls in love with Tunisian Blue (BLUE). The RED passion of artisans, El Jem, Tozur, and Seznan. Tunis and Cairouan, with thousands of years of glorious history. Let’s take a trip to Tunisia, Africa with all the colors in the world!

This week (April 1 – 4, 2024) ‘World Theme Travel’ will air the 4-part series ‘Brilliantly Beautiful, Tunisia’. Part 4 of ‘World Theme Travel’, ‘Brilliantly Beautiful, Tunisia’, ‘Back in Time, Historical Travel’ will be broadcast on EBS1 TV today (4th) at 8:40 PM.

A historical tour of Tunis, the capital of Tunisia

After the ancient Phoenicians settled in Tunisia, Tunisia was continuously invaded by other countries for 3,000 years. We begin our journey to encounter that glorious history. First, head to Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. 14th January Square is the clock tower square that is the first thing you see when entering the city. Take a walk through the square commemorating the Jasmine Revolution on January 14, 2011, in the heart of Tunisia’s modern history, where a wave of democratization arose.

Another nickname for Tunis is ‘the Paris of North Africa’. Walking down the streets with French architecture and French-style pruned trees, you feel like you are on the Champs Elysees. Bab El Bhar you meet while walking the streets of France. It is said to be a gate that separates the old town from the new town. When you go inside, you are suddenly greeted by the friendly scenery of an Islamic city?! We also visit every nook and cranny of Medina, an old town built in the 7th century.

The next destination was the Bardo Museum, known as the ‘Louvre of Tunisia’. It is especially famous as the world’s largest mosaic museum. It is said that there is a history contained in the portrait mosaic of Virgil (Publius Maro Vergilius), the representative work of this place… You can also listen to a lecture on the history of mosaics by artist Hong Il-hwa and admire the magnificent mosaics.

This time, we head to Kairouan, an Islamic holy city in North Africa. First, visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan, the largest mosque in Tunisia. After the construction of the Great Mosque, Kairouan is considered one of the four holiest places in Islam, following Mecca, Medina, and Jerusalem. We continue our journey by feeling the magnificent architectural heritage with our whole body.

The next destination was Bir Barrouta, one of the oldest wells in Kairouan. Take a sip of the water that the Islamic prophet Muhammad is said to have drunk in legend. The final part of your Islamic journey is going to an Islamic school! Take a class on reading the Quran and listen to the sound of a male student sweetly reciting azan, the sound used in Islam to inform believers of the time for worship.

A path to take root in barren land and encounter the history that has always been with humanity for thousands of years. We head to an olive farm where there is no end in sight even after going for a while. There, you meet a lovely old couple who are living the second part of their lives as an olive farm after retirement, harvest olives, and are treated to a rich meal made with precious olive oil.

The story of people who create their own colors while being grateful for the natural environment and blessings of nature, including the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara Desert. We conclude our journey through the brilliantly beautiful Tunisia.
