Romelu Lukaku, score: 8
Came off the bench and brought the change. Scored the all-important goal for Inter ahead of the second leg
Otavio, score: 4
His second yellow card which left his team with ten men was the game’s turning point
The round of 16 of the Champions League continued tonight (Wednesday) with Inter beating Porto 0:1 at the San Siro. After 86 goalless minutes, substitute Romelu Lukaku found the back of the net to give the Nerazzurri the important goal heading into the second leg in Portugal.
After only Inter was on the field in the first 20 minutes of the game and Otero Martinez managed to miss from a wink situation, the guest woke up and started to threaten Andre Onana’s goal. The players of the teams got into quite a few confrontations during the first half and the scoreboard showed 0:0 after 45 minutes of play.
A turning point was in the 78th minute when Otavio saw his second yellow card leaving his team with ten men. The big moment of the game came as mentioned in the 86th minute when Lukaku, the substitute, charged at the rebound, which he himself hit the crossbar, found the net from close range and gave the Nerazzurri the precious 0:1 victory.
Simeone Inzaghi’s team did obtain the advantage for the return match to be held in Portugal on March 14, but it is only minimal. Porto will need to win by at least two goals to qualify for the quarterfinals and since there is no longer the away goals rule, any victory by the Portuguese with a difference of one goal will send the game to overtime.
