Voting for 139 upazila elections is going on in the first phase of the sixth upazila parishad election. The polling started from 8 am on Wednesday (May 8) and will continue till 4 pm.

Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat. Jahangir Alam told reporters at Agargaon Election Commission office around 1:00 p.m. that there was an average of 15 to 20 percent vote casting in upazila elections till 12:00 noon.

Md. Jahangir Alam said that the voter turnout was low in some places due to adverse weather conditions. So far polling is going smoothly, good turnout.

The EC secretary said that voting has been suspended in a center of Lakshmichari upazila of Khagrachari. Besides, there was no major violence anywhere. There was no problem with EVM anywhere.

There are a total of 1,635 competing candidates in the first phase. Among them, 570 people are contesting for the post of chairman, 625 for vice chairman and 440 for the post of female vice chairman. However, at this stage, 8 candidates for the post of chairman, 10 for the post of vice chairman and female vice chairman, i.e. a total of 28 candidates have already been elected unopposed. 15 people were elected unopposed for three posts in five upazilas.

There are about 3 crore 14 lakh voters in this first phase election. There are about 12,000 polling stations. There are about 78,000 polling stations. Each general polling station will have 17 members and important polling stations will have 18 to 19 security members. In remote areas, there will be 19 security personnel in general centers and 20 to 21 security personnel in important centers.

Meanwhile, 418 platoons of BGB have entered the field to maintain law and order in the constituencies on the day before the first phase of upazila parishad polls. Along with this, one and a half lakh members of Ansar-VDP have been deployed across the country to maintain order in the voting along with the security of the ballot boxes of the upazila elections.

Out of the total 495 upazilas of the country, 485 upazilas eligible for election are being voted in four phases this time. Finally, in 2019, the fifth upazila parishad elections were held in five phases.
