Summer temperatures and strong gusts formed an “explosive cocktail” and did not make the firefighters’ work any easier. But the two fires which broke out on Saturday afternoon in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the communes of Larrau and Licq-Athérey, are now “totally under control”, indicates Prefecture.
The fire which broke out on the right flank of the Etxelü woods was contained on Saturday, after burning 50 hectares of vegetation. Concerning that on the left flank, controlled later and which covered 100 hectares, “operations are nevertheless continuing to extinguish a few persistent fumaroles”, state services specify. The end of operations is scheduled for the afternoon.
No homes or farms were threatened by the flames
Last year, at the same time, a fire broke out in the Pyrénées-Orientales, and destroyed nearly 1,000 hectares of vegetation.
