Google has launched the $179.99 Fitbit Edge, a hybrid fitness tracker featuring a 1.34-inch AMOLED display and a user-replaceable battery. Unveiled on October 12 and scheduled to ship on October 27, the device sits between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch 5.
The wearable market often forces a strict choice between minimalist fitness bands and fully featured smartwatches. Google’s latest hardware release addresses that gap by introducing a device equipped with a touch screen, onboard GPS, and a suite of advanced health sensors while maintaining a slim profile and a weeklong battery life.
Fitbit Edge Pricing, Preorders, and Lineup Placement
Priced at $179.99 for the standard model, preorders opened on October 12 ahead of an October 27 retail release. Alongside the standard hardware, Google offers a Stephen Curry special edition priced at $219.99 in select markets, or around Rs 21,000 in India where the standard model is priced around Rs 18,000. Official India pricing is not confirmed, though the device has also been associated with promotional pricing with discounts. The device functions as a spiritual successor to the Fitbit Charge 6, which debuted in 2023 at a lower baseline cost.

The positioning places the device directly in the middle of Google’s current wearable ecosystem. According to industry reviewers, this multi-device compatibility allows users to pair different trackers with the Google Health app simultaneously.

Starting off with the core options you can buy, the available case and band combinations are:
- Matte Black Aluminum case / Obsidian Active Band
- Polished Silver Aluminum case / Fog Active Band
- Satin Pyrite Aluminum case / Olive Active Band
- Champagne Gold case / Canyon Active Band
- Satin Pyrite Aluminum case / Stephen Curry Special Edition
For standard Active Band models, the Small size fits wrists around 130-170 mm while the Large fits wrists around 170-210 mm. For the Stephen Curry Special Edition, the Small/Medium size fits wrists measuring 135-170 mm, and the Medium/Large fits wrists measuring 170-210 mm. The construction utilizes a case made from 100% recycled aluminum, an active band made of silicone with a soft-touch coating, and a Stephen Curry band crafted from recycled polyester yarns with a water-repellent coating alongside stainless steel lugs.
Hardware Specifications and Display Upgrades
Everything is housed inside an oblong aluminum pebble measuring 39.22 x 25.56 mm with a height and thickness of 11.58mm. Weighing just 17.7 grams without a band or 33 grams with its active band attached, the tracker is 45% lighter than an Apple Watch Series 12. Google notes that the new screen provides 46% more viewing area and is more than 40% brighter than the preceding Charge 6 model’s 1.04-inch panel.

Internal hardware includes 64MB of storage, Bluetooth connectivity, and IP68 dust resistance alongside 5ATM water resistance. It requires a device running iOS 16.4 or newer, or Android 11 or newer. Advanced health and fitness tracking tools include optical heart rate monitoring via optical PPG, ECG functionality, skin temperature tracking, a built-in altimeter for stair and elevation tracking, and integration with Google Health for centralized data analysis. Built-in GPS provides location tracking, which is paired with automated workout recognition expanding from roughly 10 sports to more than 50 or approximately 100 sports depending on tracking mode lists. Additional health metrics include heart rate variability, resting heart rate, VO2max, sleep tracking, skin temperature, menstrual cycle tracking, AFib detection, workout intensity maps in the Google Health app, monthly blood pressure trends, and insulin resistance trends.
Battery Performance and Self-Repair Provisions
Power comes from a 65mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
Omissions in Connectivity and Safety Capabilities
Despite adding a display and advanced health tracking, the hardware leaves out several features found on traditional smartwatches or older fitness bands.
The device also omits a microphone and text dictation features. It can only display an incoming call notification, while messaging is limited to Quick Replies without hands-free Gemini assistant support on the device itself; any Gemini features remain strictly limited to the Google Health app and relayed to the screen. Upgrading to the Premium version of the app costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year after a three-month free trial, providing access to an AI-powered assistant called Google Health Coach where users can chat about fitness goals to receive tailored routines.
Safety features are currently exclusive to Pixel Watch, as they require deeper integration with LTE and Wi-Fi to enable the device to contact emergency services on the user’s behalf.
