Edilene Lobo

Edilene Lobo assumed this Tuesday (8) the position of substitute minister at the TSE (Superior Electoral Court), becoming the first black woman to join the Electoral Court. The inauguration ceremony took place in the office of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, president of the TSE, shortly before the trial session.

Edilene was appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in June, following a referendum by the STF (Federal Supreme Court) on a triple list. She had run for two vacancies for titular minister in May, however, André Ramos Tavares and Floriano de Azevedo Marques were appointed.

Edilene assumes the chair formerly occupied by Ramos Tavares in the class of lawyers at the TSE, playing a key role in conducting the country’s electoral affairs. According to the Constitution, the TSE is composed of ministers from the STF, the Superior Court of Justice and jurists.

As a substitute minister, Lobo will be able to judge actions and appeals in situations of absence or impediment of the titular ministers. During election periods, it will have the important responsibility of analyzing actions related to possible irregularities in political campaigns.
