The United Nations warned, “There is a risk of widespread famine and death in Sudan, the economy devastated by a year of conflict”>Darfur and elsewhere if the warring parties in Sudan do not allow humanitarian aid to enter.”
“At least 1.7 million people in Darfur were suffering from emergency levels of hunger in December, and the number is expected to be much higher today,” said Leni Kinzli, regional spokeswoman for the United Nations World Food Programme.
She added: “Recent reports indicate that 20 children have died in recent weeks, due to malnutrition, in a camp for displaced people in central Darfur.”
“Calls for humanitarian aid to reach hot conflict areas in Sudan have never been more important,” Kinzli continued.
She said: “The World Food Program’s partners on the ground reported that the situation in El Fasher is extremely horrific,” noting that “the production of basic grain crops such as wheat and sorghum is 78 percent above the five-year average.”
Kinzli called on “the international community to make a coordinated diplomatic effort to push the warring parties to provide guarantees of access and safety for humanitarian workers and convoys.”
Sudan has entered a state of chaos since mid-April 2023, due to the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, as the Rapid Support Forces took control of most parts of Darfur and besieged El Fasher, where about 500,000 civilians took refuge.
