The temperature in De Bilt soared past 20 degrees this afternoon, making today officially the first warm day of the year, NOS says. In some parts of the country it was already 20 degrees warmer this spring, but there is only officially a hot day when 20 degrees are measured at the KNMI weather station in De Bilt. It happened at 13.20 this afternoon and the column would have risen even beyond 20 degrees.
According to Weerplaza, the first hot day of this year took longer than usual: on average, it happened on April 13 in past years. Last year it happened on April 12th and in 2021 it was officially hot in the Netherlands on March 30th as well.

“It’s a bit late, but that’s not very unusual. It’s a matter of having a bit of bad luck with the wind direction,” explains NOS meteorologist Marco Verhoef. “We had a lot of north-northwest wind this year. If we had had a southerly wind for a few days, we probably would have hit 20 degrees much sooner.”

According to the portal, the last official hot day was October 30 last year, which was 186 days ago. Since 2000, there have been an average of 98 warm days a year in the Netherlands. A record number of 132 warm days was recorded in 2018.
