„Krone“: Austria raised the terror alert level this October, and since then there has been the second highest danger level. It’s also no secret that we have potential threats – so-called sleepers – in the country.
Markus Abwerzger: That is correct. According to the Interior Ministry, there are around 200 nationwide; the number of unreported cases is at least twice as high. The attacker in Vienna, who shot around three years ago, had, among other things, previously been convicted of terrorist organization, was released conditionally, had to fulfill conditions – and yet the secret service and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution were unable to monitor him seamlessly. If this cannot be done with such people, where their problem is clearly visible, how is it supposed to work for the approximately 200 or 400 sleepers? That gives me an uneasy feeling.
