FIRST Robotics Competition Announces Key Rule Changes Ahead of 2025 Season Kickoff

The FIRST Robotics Competition is refining its event guidelines as teams prepare for the 2025 season, with updates focused on streamlining load-in procedures, clarifying pit regulations, and redefining practice areas. These changes, announced as the competition nears its Kickoff event, aim to improve clarity and optimize the event experience for both participants and volunteers.

As teams gear up for the new season, organizers emphasize the importance of reviewing the complete Game Manual and Team Update 00 upon Kickoff for the most accurate and comprehensive rule set. “While we’ve pulled out a few of the larger changes here, make sure to read the Game Manual and Team Update 00 on Kickoff for final wording and to see what other rules may have been changed,” a senior official stated.

Streamlining Load-In Procedures

For several years, ambiguity surrounding load-in times and permitted activities created confusion among teams and event staff. To address this, the 2025 version of rule R304 has been removed. However, Event Rule E401 remains in effect, restricting what can be brought into the venue after load-in concludes. Teams are advised to plan accordingly and complete load-in before the designated period ends, as work outside the venue will be limited afterward.

A positive change for many teams is the increase in the load-in member limit from five to six individuals for events with designated load-in periods. This adjustment is particularly relevant for District Championships and Regionals that feature load-in phases before pits are officially open. It’s important to note that this rule does not apply to district qualifiers or some District Championships where pits open directly without a designated load-in time.

Clarifying Pit Regulations

New guidelines address concerns regarding pit activity, specifically prohibiting the operation of automated tools like 3D printers overnight. Teams will still be permitted to bring in 3D-printed parts daily as needed. Additionally, a reminder has been added regarding pit power sharing: teams causing electrical breakers to trip may be asked to reduce their power consumption. This aims to ensure equitable access to power for all participating teams.

Redefining Practice and Test Areas

FIRST is also updating the terminology and function of areas designated for robot testing. The traditional “Practice Areas” will be supplemented by clearly defined “Test Areas” at all events.

Test Areas will provide teams with representative field elements to test their robots, including starting Auto modes. However, these areas are designed for basic functionality testing and are not intended for complex Auto routines or full-field simulations. All testing within Test Areas will be “tether-only,” meaning robots must remain connected to a power source.

Recognizing that some events may have the space and resources to create full Practice Fields, organizers will introduce new wording to differentiate these more comprehensive areas from the standardized Test Areas. Further details regarding team field elements will be released soon.

With only 30 days remaining until Kickoff, these rule adjustments represent a proactive effort to enhance the FIRST Robotics Competition experience for all involved.
