Apple’s 2026 Mac Roadmap: M5 Chips, OLED Displays, and a Potential Touchscreen Revolution
Apple is poised for a significant refresh of its Mac lineup in 2026, with nearly every model slated to receive updates powered by the next generation of silicon. From the affordable MacBook Air to the high-end Mac Studio, and even a glimpse at potential M6 technology, the coming years promise substantial innovation for Apple’s desktop and laptop users.
A Wave of M5 Power
The core of Apple’s 2026 plans revolves around the M5 series of chips. According to sources,most Macs will be upgraded with these new processors throughout the year. This includes a refresh of the MacBook Air in early 2026, which will receive the same M5 chip currently found in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. Apple may also extend the SSD upgrade options available on the Pro model to the Air.
But the M5 isn’t limited to the Air. Higher-end MacBook Pro models, in both 14-inch and 16-inch sizes, are also expected to receive faster M5 pro and M5 Max chips around the same timeframe. These upgraded chips will boast increased CPU cores and improved GPUs for enhanced performance, alongside faster SSDs.
The Mac mini is also slated for a mid-2026 update, receiving both M5 and M5 Pro chips, though current rumors suggest no major design changes. Similarly, the Mac studio will see a significant boost, skipping the anticipated M4 Ultra and jumping directly to an M5 Ultra configuration, alongside M5 Max options, offering
a gap as the 2022 Studio Display launch, two new models are reportedly in growth for release in 2026. The next-generation Studio Display could retain the 27-inch screen size but upgrade to mini-LED technology, promising improved HDR, brightness, contrast, and color accuracy. It may also receive the A19 Pro chip, currently used in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Remaining Questions

The future of the Mac Pro is unclear, with a previously anticipated 2025 release with an M4 chip now pushed to 2026 or later. It’s possible the Mac Pro will receive an M5 Ultra refresh alongside the Mac Studio, but confirmation remains elusive.
Similarly, the iMac is expected to receive an M5 update in 2026, but the timing is yet to be determined. There have been whispers of a larger-screen iMac, but there’s currently no indication that such a model is still under active development.
