Connecticut to Host 30th Annual Ice breaker Tournament in 2026

Connecticut will be the centre of the college hockey universe in October 2026, as Sacred Heart University and the University of Connecticut co-host the 30th annual Ice Breaker Tournament. The event, traditionally marking the start of the NCAA Division I men’s hockey season, will feature Bowling Green and Penn State alongside the host schools.
A Showcase for New Facilities
The two-day tournament, scheduled for October 9-10, will be split between Sacred Heart’s Martire Family Arena and UConn’s Toscano Family Ice Forum – both of which opened in 2023. According to a joint announcement, these venues are among the newest in NCAA Division I men’s hockey, surpassed only by the arenas at St. Thomas and Union, which debuted this October. “We are excited to showcase the spectacular Martire Family Arena by co-hosting this tournament with UConn,” stated a senior official at Sacred Heart.
Tournament history and Importance
The Ice Breaker Tournament began in 1997 in Madison, Wisconsin, and has since become a celebrated tradition. It annually brings together four teams, typically representing different conferences, to kick off the college hockey season. College Hockey Inc. administers the tournament on behalf of the Hockey Commissioners Association. This year’s event will be the third time the tournament has utilized a co-hosting model, following previous collaborations between Air Force and Denver in 2022, and Bemidji State and North Dakota the following year.
