The 2026 National Beautiful Countryside Basketball Games Northern Division tournament officially opened on August 15 in Jianshe Village, Baoqing County, Heilongjiang Province. Six days of competition feature 16 teams and over 200 athletes vying for five national finals berths in a first for the region.
Northeast Debut Sparks Regional Excitement
The agricultural heartland of northeast China has officially stepped onto the national basketball stage. For the first time, a major regional division of the tournament has landed in the Northeast, bringing 16 representative squads and more than 200 players from 10 provinces, regions, and municipalities to the black-soil farmlands of Heilongjiang according to regional reporting.
The tournament opened on August 15 in Jianshe Village, located in Baoqing Town within Shuangyashan’s Tibet. The participating athletes traveled from places as far-flung as Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shandong, and Xinjiang.
Coming to Baoqing, the first impression is one of shock. I did not expect a county-level city in the Northeast to be able to host a national competition of such high specifications. The neat courts, thoughtful and meticulous logistical support, and the hospitality of the local people are heartwarming everywhere. Shandong team member, via Chinanews
Athletes from the Inner Mongolia delegation echoed that sentiment, noting the clean urban and rural environment, expansive black-soil scenery, and attentive lodging arrangements that left the entire squad eager for the games ahead.
Six-Day Schedule and the Road to the National Finals
The northern division matches are scheduled for a compact six-day window running from August 15 through August 20, consisting of 6 rounds and 36 total matchups as detailed by event organizers.
When the dust settles on August 20, the top five teams from the northern division will secure direct advancement to the national finals. They will join the top five qualifiers from both the central and southern divisions, alongside a representative squad from the national finals host location, to form the ultimate 16-team tournament bracket analyzing the broader tournament structure.
Following the conclusion of play in Heilongjiang, the remaining preliminary rounds shift southward. The central division tournament is slated for Xingwen County in Sichuan Province’s Yibin City, while the southern division takes place in Shanglin County within Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The grand finale will be hosted later in Xianfeng County, located in Hubei Province’s Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture.
Merging Grassroots Sport with Rural Revitalization
Sticking strictly to a mandate of farmer-centric participation and rural venues, local organizers have expanded the event into a multi-dimensional economic and cultural festival. Baoqing County has integrated sports with agriculture, culture, and tourism to convert athletic foot traffic into sustainable local growth noted in coverage of the opening events.
Visitors and local residents navigating the venue grounds can explore the Black Soil Quality Products harvest market, which showcases regional agricultural goods and traditional local foods. Concurrently, a photography exhibition highlights Heilongjiang’s rural construction achievements, while a summer culture and art festival features daytime interactive activities and nighttime stage performances featuring original folk programming.
To maximize tourist engagement, officials introduced specialized travel routes centered around wetland ecological leisure and agricultural folk experiences, paired with the distribution of local tourism consumption vouchers to stimulate regional spending during the tournament week.
