2026 UCI Cyclocross World Championships: Van der Poel Eyes History in Hulst

The 2026 UCI Cyclocross World Championships are set to unfold in Hulst, Netherlands, from January 30th to February 1st, promising three days of intense competition on a challenging course. Organizers anticipate a landmark event, stating, “These world championships will be a cycling festival unlike any other,” with a focus on delivering top-tier racing to fans, families, and the local community.

A Demanding Course for Elite Cyclists

The course itself is designed to push riders to their limits. It features a variety of technical elements, including water crossings via pontoons, demanding climbs, and swift descents. These obstacles will undoubtedly test the skill and endurance of every competitor.

Van der Poel’s Pursuit of a Record Eighth Title

A central storyline heading into the championships revolves around Mathieu van der Poel and his quest for a record-setting eighth elite rainbow jersey. Currently tied with Eric De Vlaeminck at seven titles, Van der Poel has the opportunity to cement his legacy as the most decorated cyclocross rider in history.

Canadian Contingent Ready to Compete

Canada will be well-represented across all categories. In the elite women’s race, national champion Maghalie Rochette and Sidney McGill will lead the charge. The Canadian hopes in the elite men’s race rest on the shoulders of Cody Scott.

Rising Stars and Under-23 Contenders

The under-23 ranks showcase promising talent. Rafaelle Carrier is emerging as a strong medal contender for the Canadian team, having recently demonstrated her capabilities by securing a podium finish in an elite race at a Superprestige event in early January and defeating her rival, Zoe Bäckstedt. Carrier will be supported by teammates Nico Knoll and Dorothee Peron. The Canadian under-23 men’s team will feature Mathis Duval and Rhett Bates.

Junior Canadians Impress on the International Stage

Canada’s junior riders have also been making waves internationally this winter. Alexa Haviland and Claire Mackinnon will compete in the junior women’s field, while Émilien Belzile, Sagan Goertz, Grayson Franks, and Farland Lamont will race in the junior men’s event. Notably, both Haviland and Belzile have shown particularly strong form this season.
