Oakland University Women’s Soccer has named Brooke Blackstock, Brae Cole, and Ella Shapiro as captains for the upcoming 2026 season, recognizing their pivotal roles in the team’s most successful recent postseason run. The announcement underscores a period of growth and ambition for the program as it aims to reclaim its prominence within the Horizon League.
Leadership Earned Through Performance
The selection of these three players reflects their demonstrated leadership both on and off the field, according to Oakland Head Coach Devin Zvosec. “EARNED! I’m incredibly proud of these three,” Zvosec stated. “Each of them played an important leadership role in our program’s success and in our conference tournament run this past fall. I know that Brooke, Ella, and Brae are the right three people to continue pushing our program to new heights and putting Oakland women’s soccer back on the map. They each bring a unique perspective, background, and leadership quality that will help guide our team toward success both on and off the field.”
Brooke Blackstock: Defensive Anchor and Academic Achiever
Brooke Blackstock, a returning junior, solidified her position as a key defender during a breakout 2025 season. She featured in 20 of Oakland’s matches, playing a full 90 minutes in all but two contests. Blackstock’s impact extends beyond the pitch, as she was recognized by College Sports Communicators with a 2025 CSC Women’s Soccer All-District Team selection, acknowledging her dedication to academic excellence.
Brae Cole: Offensive Force and Horizon League Standout
Brae Cole, entering her second season as a redshirt senior, brings a dynamic presence to the field, excelling as both a defender and midfielder. Cole enjoyed a season of career highs in 2025, earning a spot on the #HLWSOC All-League Second Team. Notably, she was the only Horizon League player to achieve a hat-trick, scoring three goals against Mercyhurst on August 21st. Cole led the team in minutes played (1,727), goals (6), and assists (3), starting all 20 matches.
Ella Shapiro: Midfield Maestro and Sportsmanship Exemplar
Ella Shapiro, also a redshirt senior beginning her second season with the Golden Grizzlies, is a consistent force in the midfield. She logged 1,641 minutes, starting all 20 matches of the 2025 season, and contributed with 15 shots, six of which were on goal, resulting in two goals. Shapiro’s commitment to fair play and leadership qualities were recognized by the Horizon League, naming her a 2025 #HLWSOC Sportsmanship Award Finalist.
Blackstock, Cole, and Shapiro represent a core of experienced and dedicated players poised to lead Oakland Women’s Soccer toward continued success and a competitive standing within the Horizon League in 2026.
