World Cup Ticket Prices Spark Outrage as ‘Extortionate’ costs Emerge
Despite assurances of fixed pricing, loyal fans hoping to attend the 2025 FIFA World Cup are facing shockingly high ticket costs, prompting calls for the governing body to halt sales and reconsider its approach. The controversy centers around the Participant Member Association (PMA) allocation – intended for the most dedicated supporters – with prices soaring to levels critics are calling a “monumental betrayal.”
The escalating costs came to light after the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) released details of its PMA allocation, designed for fans who plan to attend multiple matches. While these tickets are not subject to dynamic pricing – a system used in earlier sales windows where prices fluctuate with demand – the fixed prices themselves are drawing fierce condemnation.
According to reports, the cheapest ticket for the July 19th final is listed at US$4,185. A dedicated England supporter seeking to attend every game, from the opening whistle to the championship match, could face a bill of US$7,020. “Football Supporters Europe is astonished by the extortionate ticket prices imposed by Fifa on the most dedicated supporters for next year’s Fifa World Cup,” a statement from the organization read. “This is a monumental betrayal of the tradition of the world Cup, ignoring the contribution of supporters to the spectacle it is.”
The PMA allocation represents eight percent of a stadium’s capacity for each match. Though, Football Supporters europe (FSE) alleges that pricing isn’t standardized across all group stage games, appearing to be based on “vague criteria such as the perceived attractiveness of the fixture.” This perceived inconsistency adds to the frustration of fans.
The England Supporters Travel Club (ESTC) received pricing information from the Football Association (FA) on December 11th, confirming the US$7,020 figure for a full tournament run. England fans’ group Free lions echoed FSE’s concerns, stating on X (formerly Twitter) that the prices were “shocking…above and beyond the already high costs we suspected.” The group added, “This can’t be allowed to happen. Match-goers across the world deserve protection from these rip-off prices.”
Specific game costs are also raising eyebrows. England supporters can anticipate paying at least UK£198 for a ticket to the opening match against Croatia on June 17th. The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has confirmed PMA pricing for its matches, with games against Haiti in Boston ranging from US$180 to US$500, the match against Morocco also in Boston starting at US$220, and the final group game against Brazil in Miami costing a minimum of US$265. Notably, the final ticket price aligns with the figure previously published by the Croatian FA.
A random selection draw for World Cup tickets opened on Thursday, December 14th, at 4pm UK time. Fans have until January 13th to submit their orders for fixed-price tickets, with notification of triumphant allocations – and subsequent credit card charges – to follow.
the current situation stands in stark contrast to the UEFA Euro 2024, where following England through the tournament with “fan first” category tickets would have cost approximately €375 (US$439), and even the next ticket category up totaled €860 (US$1,000).
