1X’s Neo Robot: The $20,000 Humanoid Assistant Arrives, But Is It Ready to Work?

The future of household help has arrived, and it comes with a hefty price tag. 1X, a California-based robotics company, is now accepting preorders for Neo, a humanoid robot designed to function as a personal assistant capable of tackling everyday chores. Priced at $20,000 – or $499 a month via subscription, pending availability – Neo represents a significant leap toward realizing the long-held science fiction dream of robotic domesticity.

A New Order of Humanoid

Neo stands 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs roughly the same as a golden retriever. Unlike robot vacuums from companies like Roomba, Eufy, and Ecovacs, Neo is designed to perform a wider range of tasks, including folding laundry, running a vacuum, tidying shelves, bringing in groceries, opening doors, climbing stairs, and even acting as a home entertainment system. This “consumer-ready humanoid” distinguishes itself from other humanoid robots currently under development by companies like Tesla and Figure, which are primarily focused on industrial applications.

Strength and Dexterity, With a Human Touch

The robot’s smooth, almost human-like gait is achieved through 1X’s innovative tendon-driven motor system, providing both gentle motion and impressive strength. According to the company, Neo can lift up to 154 pounds and carry 55 pounds, all while operating more quietly than a standard refrigerator. Its design incorporates soft materials and neutral colors, aiming for a less intimidating aesthetic than the metallic prototypes often seen in the robotics world.

Neo boasts a 4-hour runtime and hands with an IP68 rating, meaning they are fully submersible in water. Connectivity is provided via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 5G, and the robot utilizes a built-in Large Language Model (LLM) – the same AI technology powering systems like ChatGPT and Gemini – for conversational interaction. Control is primarily voice-activated, allowing users to interact with Neo as they would a human member of the household.

The Reality of Remote Operation

However, the current capabilities of Neo are heavily reliant on human assistance. A recent assessment by The Wall Street Journal revealed that the robot is largely teleoperated, meaning a human operator controls its actions remotely using a virtual-reality headset and controllers. “I didn’t see Neo do anything autonomously, although the company did share a video of Neo opening a door on its own,” reported the Journal’s Joanna Stern.

1X CEO Bernt Børnich acknowledged that full autonomy is still a work in progress, stating that Neo will be capable of performing most tasks autonomously by 2026, though the initial quality “may lag at first.” For tasks Neo hasn’t learned, users can schedule an “1X Expert” to remotely guide the robot through the process, effectively teaching it on the job.

Privacy Concerns and the “Social Contract”

The learning process inherent in Neo’s development raises significant privacy concerns. The robot utilizes visual, audio, and contextual intelligence – meaning it can see, hear, and remember interactions within the home. As Børnich explained to the Journal, “If you buy this product, it is because you’re OK with that social contract. It’s less about Neo instantly doing your chores and more about you helping Neo learn to do them safely and effectively.”

These concerns prompted a response from computer industry luminary John Carmack, known for his work in VR and game development. Carmack suggested that companies should be upfront about the current limitations of the technology, advocating for the sale of “remote operated household help” rather than promising full autonomy.

1X maintains it is taking steps to protect user privacy, stating that Neo only listens when it recognizes its name, cameras will blur out human faces, and users can restrict access to certain areas of their homes. Furthermore, the company assures owners that Neo will never be teleoperated without their explicit approval.

Availability and the Future of Robotic Assistance

The first Neo units are slated to ship to customers in the US in 2026, with an international rollout planned for 2027. While the $20,000 price point and reliance on remote operation may seem daunting, Neo represents a tangible step toward a future once relegated to the realm of science fiction. It’s a future that, as Neo’s development continues, may ultimately redefine our relationship with technology and the very concept of household labor.
