The explosion occurred as the victims tried to collect leaking fuel from the tanker after an accident in the Miragoane region in the southwest of the country, witnesses said.
The chief executive of the country’s civil defense, Emmanuel Pierre, said that interim Prime Minister Gary Connell called an emergency meeting after this tragedy.
According to this official, another charred body was found in the evening near the site of the explosion, which increased the death toll from 16 to 24 people.
The number of injured reached about 40, including 19 with serious burns, and it is planned to transport them by air to specialized hospitals in the capital, Port-au-Prince, by the Ministry of Health and the non-governmental organization Doctors Without Borders. .
Pierre said that only 6 injured people could be transported on Saturday evening.
For those with 80% burns, they could not be transported and had to be treated in hospitals in Miragoane, a coastal city located about 100 kilometers from Port-au-Prince.
