At least 24 prisoners were killed and more than 40 others were injured in gun battles that took place between prisoners inside a prison in the state of Guayas in southwestern Ecuador, the authorities announced.
Local police official General Fausto Buenano said in a tweet published by the coastal state government on its official Twitter account that the confrontations between prisoners left “24 dead and 42 wounded.”

For months, Ecuadorian prisons have witnessed repeated violence between rival gangs competing to control drug trafficking, according to the authorities.
In February, simultaneous riots in four of the country’s main prisons led to the deaths of 79 people, some of whom were beheaded.
According to the Ecuadorian Office of Grievances, 103 murders were committed in the country’s prisons in 2020.
