Tablets are equally at home on the desk and on the couch, but which one is best?

The tablet comparison by Stiftung Warentest shows that it doesn’t always have to be expensive. While the test winners are not surprising, a device for around 150 euros was also convincing. Another candidate in this price range, however, received the grade “poor”.

About the test winners in the current Tablet comparison by Stiftung Warentest need not say much – because they are not surprising. The testers put a total of 25 candidates through their paces. They divided the results into three categories: large, medium and small tablets. One manufacturer dominates all the tables: Apple. Whether iPad Pro or iPad mini – all are “good” with a one before the decimal point. Only one manufacturer even comes close. From the Android camp, only Samsung manages the same rating with the Tab S8. The test midfield is much more exciting.

The testers evaluated the devices in five disciplines. 30 percent of the overall grade went to the functions, 20 percent each to the display, the battery and the handling and the remaining ten percent accounted for the versatility.

The common problem of the test winners: Even the iPad mini with mobile phone functionality costs over 800 euros – the latest generation iPad Pro with 12.9 inches even 1570 euros. That’s a lot of money for a few evenings on the couch or as a companion in meetings. But Warentest gives the all-clear: If you know which device to buy, 150 euros are enough. However, the test shows that you can also be very wrong at these prices – so keep your eyes open when buying a tablet.

150 euros are enough – if you know which tablet

The best cheap home is Lenovo. The Tab M9 TB310FU achieved the overall grade “good” (2.2) in the test. At a price of 153 euros, this is a remarkable achievement – because among the small devices with a screen diagonal of up to 23 centimeters, only the iPad mini is better – and it costs many times over. The testers praised the good display, the very good battery life, the good handling and the still satisfactory functions of the Lenovo – which also means the performance. Of course, the Lenovo can’t keep up with the lightning-fast Apple chips, but apparently the cheap hardware was easily enough for most tasks.

As already mentioned, caution is advised in this price range: Because you get the worst tablet in the test for 150 euros. Stiftung Warentest devoted almost a whole page to the Peaq PET 1008, a cheap tablet from MediaMarktSaturn. According to their own statements, the testers had to stop the test with this device because three out of three devices failed completely in the middle of the test and a software error forced them to delete all data before continuing to use it. Even if MediaMarktSaturn asserts that this is a thing of the past thanks to an update, Warentest drew the red card and awarded the grade “poor” (5.0).

Honor puts Apple and Samsung on the block

Even without errors, it doesn’t look much better in some cases. Similar devices from lesser-known manufacturers only got a “satisfactory” rating, because it was evidently lacking in performance. Warentest praised the devices from the Honor brand. Especially if it is supposed to be a very large tablet, the Honor Pad 8 is a “good” (2.2) device for only 320 euros – Apple and Samsung don’t come close in terms of price with their devices even on sale days.
