At least 27 people have died and another four are missing due to the passage of Hurricane ‘Otis’, which entered Mexico early Wednesday as a category five cyclone and after a rapid and sudden consolidation in Atlantic waters, according to the first balance of victims given by the Mexican Government.

The Minister of Security and Citizen Protection, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, has announced that the authorities of the state of Guerrero, the most affected, have already registered 27 fatalities. She has also reported serious material damage, to the point that 80 percent of the hotels in Acapulco would have suffered the ravages of this storm.

The state governor, Evelyn Salgado, confirmed in a telephone intervention during this same appearance that “work is already underway to restore all services.” The president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has also announced an aid plan for affected citizens.

A “house-to-house” census

The federal government will begin a “house-by-house” census to estimate the damage caused by the hurricane. López Obrador has indicated that one thousand officials will be in charge of this registry to keep track of both the homes and businesses that have been affected.
The Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) has also deployed a brigade of 900 workers, 600 vehicles and 200 pieces of heavy machinery to support the infrastructures with the most damage, reports the newspaper ‘Milenio’.

Among the affected roads are the highways that connect the city of Acapulco with other important locations, including the capital.

The Minister of Security has stressed that the forecasts did not anticipate the strength that ‘Otis’ ended up gaining, which went from being a tropical storm to becoming a category five hurricane, the maximum on the Saffir-Simpson scale, in a matter of twelve hours. The cyclone made landfall in Mexico with maximum sustained winds of 270 kilometers per hour.
