Nearly 2,700 teenage athletes from 204 national Olympic committees gathered in Senegal on Saturday as the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games opened, marking the first time the Olympic movement has ever held an event on African soil.
The fourth summer edition of the Youth Olympics commenced with an opening ceremony in Diamniadio, launching a two-week program spanning Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly that runs until November 13. For a continent that has never hosted the Summer Olympics, the tournament represents a historic milestone.

President Faye Highlights Continental Scale of Youth Olympic Games
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye addressed a sports and development summit ahead of the opening ceremony, emphasizing the continental scope of the event. Today it’s not just a nation that is welcoming the Youth Olympic Games; it’s an entire continent that is opening its arms
, he told attendees.

The path to the opening ceremony required overcoming substantial delays and logistical hurdles. The Games were originally scheduled for 2022 but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Senegal also worked through political and financial challenges, including negotiations with creditors following undisclosed debt issues that led to credit downgrades.
Competition Scope and Notable Delegations
The event features competitors aged 14 to 17 participating across 153 medal events. The host nation has fielded 136 athletes, supported by roughly 6,000 local volunteers. A refugee team composed primarily of athletes based in Africa is also participating.
