28% of the fleet of urban and metropolitan buses that the mobility company Alsa operates in Spain are eco or zero emissions, as reported in the latest sustainability report that has just been made public by the company, which this year celebrates the first centenary of its constitution in 1923.

Specifically, of the total of 2,072 vehicles Class I and II that Alsa uses in the 44 urban and metropolitan transport operations it manages in Spain, 579 are green technology in its different variants (electric propulsion, hybrid, CNG/LNG, hydrogen and dualized fuels ECO so much GNC as GLP), which represents 27.9% of the total. Last year, the incorporation of these vehicles prevented the emission of 19,639 tCO2 into the atmosphere.

In the field of decarbonization, the company has undertaken some pioneering projects in our country, such as the operation of the first 100% electric autonomous vehicles in open traffic in Madrid and Asturias; the start-up of the first hydrogen bus that operates an urban line permanently in Torrejon de Ardoz (Madrid); and the first electric bus that provides intercity services.

For Francisco Iglesias, CEO of Alsa, “With all this, the company continues to advance in its commitment to the decarbonization of mobility and contributing to the SDGs “Climate Action” and “Sustainable Cities and Communities.” We thus continue to take steps to fulfill our commitment that 100% of the urban buses operated by Alsa in Spain will be zero emissions by 2035.”

ESG Approach

In its sustainability report, which has been verified by Aenor in accordance with GRI standards, the company provides complete information on its management with a focus on the three ESG criteria: environmental, social and governance, covering its activities in Spain, Morocco, Switzerland and Portugal.

At the international level, Alsa will undertake the implementation of three important contracts before the end of this year: metropolitan services in Porto; the expansion of urban services in the network of TPG in Geneva with electric buses; and the start of intercity services in Saudi Arabia.

Regarding diversification, and after the company’s entry into the medical transport sector last year, Alsa has created the new company SANIRwith which the management of the recently awarded emergency medical transport contract for the Community of Madrid will begin.
