FC St. Pauli is the clear leader in the 2nd Bundesliga. But the climb is not yet fixed. And the latest defeat will particularly annoy the “Kiezkickers”.
Second division leaders FC St. Pauli lost the top game on Saturday evening 1-2 at Karlsruher SC. The Baden team inflicted only their third defeat of the season on Hamburg and are keeping the door to promotion a little open.
The goals in Karlsruhe were scored by Marcel Franke (2nd minute) and Paul Nebel (69th) for KSC, while Jackson Irvine scored for the guests (37th).
That’s how the game went
The league leaders traveled to KSC with the tailwind of three wins in a row. But after just a few minutes all plans were gone, after a corner Franke scored from close range. In a lively game, the guests pushed for a quick equalizer, but Manolis Saliakas (12′) failed to hit the crossbar. Irvine did better, scoring the equalizer with a header.
The encounter remained intense in round two. Irvine’s second goal was canceled after a VAR check due to an offside position (53′). On the other side, fog made the home fans cheer. In stoppage time, Marcel Hartel missed the equalizer with a direct shot.
The KSC has to go to SC Paderborn next Saturday, who lost 2-3 against Hertha BSC on Friday. And St. Pauli hosts SV Elversberg on Sunday.
