According to the largest study to date, walk at least 3,967 steps a day reduces the Death risk from any cause, while taking 2,400 steps a day lowers the risk of death related to cardiovascular disease, which affects the heart and blood vessels.

A recent study, published in the journal “European Journal of Preventive Cardiology”is based on an analysis of 226.889 personas involved in 17 different studies globally. This study shows that there is a direct relationship between the number of steps walked and the health benefitsunderlining that higher levels of physical activity have a positive impact on well-being.

Each increase from 500 to 1,000 additional steps is directly related to a significant decrease in the risk of dying from any cause or cardiovascular disease. Increasing the number of steps by 1,000 per day is correlated with a 15% reduction in the overall risk of mortality, while an increase of 500 daily steps is associated with a 7% decrease in the risk of death due to cardiovascular disease.

“Our study confirms that the more you walk the better”, indicates Maciej Banach, professor of cardiology at the Medical University of Lodz (Poland) and associate professor at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (United States).

New studies reaffirm that exercise serves as an antidepressant

And he adds: “We discovered that this applies both men and women, regardless of age and whether you live in a temperate, subtropical, or subpolar region of the world, or in a region with a mix of climates. Furthermore, our analysis indicates that it takes only about 4,000 steps a day to significantly reduce deaths from any cause and even less to reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease.”

a global problem

There is strong supporting evidence indicating that a sedentary lifestyle can significantly contribute to the increase in cardiovascular disease and a reduction in life expectancy. Several studies corroborated that the lack of physical activity affects more than a quarter of the global population.

The proportion of women who do not comply with an adequate amount of physical activity is higher than that of men (32% versus 23%), and this disparity is also seen between people from higher-income countries compared to lower-income nations (37% vs. 16%).

According to information provided by the World Health Organization (WHO), Lack of adequate physical activity ranks fourth among the most common causes of death in the world. It is the cause of approximately 3.2 million deaths annually.

The emergence of the pandemic COVID-19 also caused a decreased levels of physical activityand until now, even years later, these levels have not fully recovered.

This study represents a milestone as it is the first to examine not only the effects of walking up to 20,000 steps a day, but also on investigate whether there are variations based on age, gender or geographic location of people.

Researcher-reviewed studies rely on following participants for an average period of seven years. The average age of the participants was 64 years, with 49% being women.

In people 60 years and older, the magnitude of the decrease in the risk of death was smaller compared to those who were younger than 60 years. Among older adults, there was a 42% risk reduction for those who walked 6,000 to 10,000 steps dailywhile this risk was reduced by 49% in younger adults who walked 7,000 to 13,000 steps a day.
