The journal published on Monday (February 12) approving four more products as Geographical Indication (GI) products of Bangladesh. The four products are — Handibhanga mango from Rangpur, agar and agar atar from Moulvibazar and manda from Muktagacha. With this, the number of approved GI products in Bangladesh stands at 28.

In 2003, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT) under the Ministry of Industry, which was responsible for this work in Bangladesh, started its journey. It is now known as the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT). The initiative of the Ministry of Industries led to the passing of the Geographical Indication Products (Registration and Protection) Act, 2013. Two years later, the Geographical Indications Rules, 2015 were enacted.

In 2016, Jamdani saree was recognized as the first GI product in Bangladesh. After that 20 more products got recognition. They are-Bangladeshi hilsa, Chapainawabganj khirsapat mango, Vijaypur white soil, Dinajpur Kataribhog, Bangladeshi Kalijira, Rangpur shataranji, Rajshahi silk, Dhakai muslin, Rajshahi-Chapainawabganj Fazli mango, Bangladesh Bagda shrimp, Bangladesh Shitalpati, Bogra curd, Sherpur Tulshimala rice, Chapainawabganj Langra mango and Ashwina mango, Kachagolla of Natore, Black Bengal goat of Bangladesh, Chamcham of Porabari of Tangail, Rasmalai of Comilla and Khaja of Sesame in Kushtia.

The recently approved three products Tangail saree, Narsingdi’s Amritsagar banana and Gopalganj’s Rasgolla’s approval copy and journal were handed over to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday by Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun and Senior Secretary of Industry Ministry Zakia Sultana. The number of GI products is 24. The total number of approved GI products stands at 28 with the publication of four GI product journals today.

Two more products are in the process of being approved for GI recognition. They are Nakshikantha of Jamalpur and Date Jaggery of Jessore. Both products are expected to be published in the journal next week.
