The Florenc bus station is mainly used by international and long-distance transport. “International traffic comes to us in almost 100 percent of cases, long-distance lines come here from domestic,” said Vráblík. According to Vráblík, the number of domestic lines at the station has been decreasing in the last 15 years, while international lines have increased. “So while 15 years ago a third of connections were international and two-thirds domestic, today it’s the other way around,” he said.

“We estimated that ten million people passed through here in 2019, now there will be an average of one million fewer passengers,” said Vráblík. However, he added that he can only estimate the number of checked-in passengers, because ČSAD Praha holding does not sell tickets and thus does not have official data. According to Vráblík, roughly 100 carriers provide traffic at the station. FlixBus and RegioJet are among those with the largest share of passes, he added.

Vráblík estimates the investment in larger projects at the Florenc station to be 225 million crowns from 2009. Major investments include, for example, a check-in hall for 72 million, a washing center and technical facilities for carriers. As for changes in the short term, according to Vráblík, passengers could expect escalators from Florenc station by the end of next year. The exit towards the bus station is now the only exit from the station that does not have escalators.

Florence 21

In the long term, the plan is to implement the Florenc 21 project, which is supposed to transform the brownfield around the Florenc station into a modern urban complex. According to Vrablík, the investment of ČSAD Praha holding will amount to several billion crowns. “The bus station will be part of the building. This will create a part of the city into which the bus station will be integrated,” he said.

“What we expect from this is that the bus station will continue to function, it will be able to make money. In addition, there will be an opportunity to develop the area as a city center,” said Vráblík. The company plans to build offices, apartments or shops. In the winning project, 50 percent is for offices, 40 percent for apartments and ten percent for shops.

The architectural studio Unit Architekti and its team won the urban design competition for the new look of Florence

At the beginning of December 2021, a team including the Czech architectural studios UNIT architects, A69 architects and the London studio Marko & Placemakers won the urban planning competition. Last March, the Prague councilors approved the results of the competition, now the investors of ČSAD Praha holding together with the company Masaryk Station Development, which is controlled by Penta, are waiting for a change in the zoning plan.

“The result of the competition is still awaiting the approval of some professional bodies,” said Vráblík. He estimated that construction could begin five years after the zoning change. Construction in the part of the bus station should start later compared to the rest of the construction of the complex, due to the still unclear solution to the Prague railway junction.
