NFL Disciplines 49ers Players Following Contentious Seahawks Victory, Darnold Shines

The NFL has levied fines against multiple San Francisco 49ers players stemming from actions during their January 17th divisional game against the Seattle Seahawks, a contest decisively won by Seattle with a 41-6 scoreline. The Seahawks now set their sights on the NFC Championship game against the Los Angeles Rams on January 25th, aiming for a Super Bowl berth.

Seahawks Dominate 49ers in Playoff Matchup

The January 17th game between the Seahawks and 49ers was characterized by intense emotion, though ultimately proved one-sided. The Seattle Seahawks’ victory was comprehensive, leaving little doubt as to their superiority on the day. “What an atmosphere,” one observer noted about the stadium environment, adding, “Holy smokes. The 12s, just our organization putting on a great setting. You do try to actually try to take some time and look around and just understand how incredibly blessed we are with the best fans in the world.” The enthusiastic support of the Seattle fanbase clearly impacted the game, with another source stating, “It definitely made an impact to start the game. I just want to appreciate this. That was awesome, freaking awesome.”

NFL Hands Down Player Punishments

Each week, the NFL issues penalties for player conduct during the previous week’s games, designed “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” These measures are jointly agreed upon by the NFL and the NFL Players Association before the season begins. On January 24th, the league announced fines for two 49ers players.

Deommodore Lenoir was fined $20,944 for “unnecessary roughness” and “use of the helmet” during a play at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter. Dee Winters received a $5,907 fine for “unnecessary roughness” and a “hip-drop tackle” at the 4:01 mark of the same quarter. Notably, Lenoir previously received the largest fine of the week for similar infractions during a game against the Chicago Bears.

Players have the right to appeal these fines, with cases being heard by a panel of former NFL players – Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson – jointly appointed and paid by the NFL and NFLPA. Decisions made by this panel are final and binding. Funds collected from these accountability fines are directed towards the Professional Athletes Foundation, supporting former players in need, and the NFL Foundation, furthering athlete health, safety, and wellness at all levels of the sport.

Sam Darnold Leads Seahawks’ Offensive Charge

A key factor in the Seahawks’ success this season has been the performance of quarterback Sam Darnold, who joined the team from the Minnesota Vikings. According to NFL research, Darnold completed 4,048 passing yards and 25 touchdowns with only 14 interceptions during the 2025-26 regular season. He achieved a 67.7% completion rate and a 99.1 passer rating, leading the Seahawks to a 14-3 record and the top seed in the NFC.

Darnold will be crucial as the Seahawks attempt to replicate this success against the Rams on January 25th, with a Super Bowl appearance on the line.
