There are five types of animals that may be killed in the Holy Land of Mecca and Medina or during Ihram. These five animals are considered as annoying fasiq animals.

In Surat Al-Maidah verse 95, God forbids those who are Ihram (Hajj and Umrah) killing game animals or hunting them. However, for these five types of animals it is permissible to kill them because they are considered dangerous.

This is explained in the authentic Hadith as the following words of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

Five immoral people shall be killed within the condominium: the serpent, the spotted crow, the vole, the voracious dog, and the hummingbird.

It means: “The five fasiq (destroying) animals that may be killed outside the Holy Land and in the Holy Land are: snakes, crows, rats, fanged animals (fierce dogs) and eagles.” (Muttafaqun ‘alaihi)

In the Hadith above, the Prophet describes the animals with terms fawasiq or harassing and harmful. Until the Prophet SAW allowed him to be killed.

As for the animals that are not allowed to be killed whether in the Holy Land or outside the Holy Land, there are four of them. “From Abdullah bin Abbas radliyallahu ‘anhuma that Rasulullah SAW forbade killing four kinds of animals, namely: ants, bees, hud-hud, and shurad (suradi bird).” (HR Abu Dawud, Ibnu Majah and Ahmad)
