Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shrabani Roy returned the money taken by the Awami League leader in the name of providing shelter project houses in Gurdaspur Upazila of Natore.

He called the complainants to his residence on Friday (April 5) morning and returned the money. At around 10:30 AM, UNO called the complainant Asma Begum, Injira Begum, Rabia Begum, Rizia Begum, Habia Begum, Sahara Begum and Mumtaz Begum to her residence. He held a meeting with the complainants there for a long time.

Meanwhile, when the news of the return of the money spread, local news workers stood in front of the UNO residence. When asked to talk to UNO about this, he avoided. At around 2 pm, the women victims were taken down by tying a ladder to the back wall of his residence.

On the way back home after returning the money, the complaining women spoke to the journalists at the Gurdaspur police station intersection. They show the bundle of money they got back.

According to them, Gurdaspur Upazila Awami League’s organizing secretary Nazrul Islam took Tk 50,000 from them by promising to get a house in the Laxmipur shelter project of Nazirpur union in the upazila. To get this money back, Sahara Khatun and Mumtaz Begum filed a case in NATO Amli Court as plaintiffs. When news about this was published, the matter came to the attention of the Prime Minister’s Office and the Deputy Commissioner. In this context, Additional District Commissioner (Revenue) Noor Mohammad Masum heard the complainants in the Upazila Nirbahi Officer’s office on Thursday. Accused Awami League leader Nazrul Islam was not present at that time. Besides UNO Shrabani Roy, Assistant Commissioner (Lands) Mehdi Hasan Shakeel was present in the hearing.

The victimized women also said that after the hearing, the accused Nazrul Islam went to their house on Thursday night and confessed his mistake and expressed his regret. They also said that they will get their money back through UNO. UNO Shravani Roy was mobile on Thursday night and asked to come to her official residence on Friday to return the money. When they went there at around 10:30 am, four of the seven complainants were refunded Tk 50,000 and one Tk 40,000 on condition of confidentiality. But Sahara Begum and Mumtaz Begum have not got the money back yet.

Asma Begum, the woman who got the money back, said, “On the advice of UNO, with the help of his driver Zainal Hossain, he climbed the ladder with the money and climbed over the wall to avoid the attention of the journalists.”

When the accused Awami League leader Nazrul Islam was called on his mobile number, he refused to comment.

On Friday afternoon, UNO Shrabani Roy said, “The victims complained to me. Later I settled the matter with the aim of establishing peace between the two parties.
