Today marks the 14th day since Russia launched an offensive against Ukraine on the 24th of last month. Ukraine has launched an offensive in the Russian capital, Kiev, and the 2nd largest city, Kharkiv, occupying several cities. Within days of the start of the war, Ukraine announced that the people would have to come forward to fight Russia and that anyone who did so would be provided with weapons.
Accordingly, Ukrainian President Zhelensky ordered the formation of an international force to fight against Russia. A website has been created for this purpose and it has been said that those who want to join the Ukrainian army as volunteers can apply. It was reported that any country other than Ukraine could join.
Subsequently, people from various countries applied to the Ukrainian military. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Kuleba recently said that 20,000 people from 52 countries have joined the international force. Sainikesh, a student from Coimbatore, also joined the Ukrainian army. His parents are upset as he says he is fighting against Russia. The federal government is investigating the matter.
People from the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Mexico and Lithuania have also joined the Ukrainian army. It has been reported that more than 500 Indians have applied online in the Ukrainian army. According to the embassy, about 500 people, including some ex-servicemen, have applied to fight against Russia. However, the Russian military has said it will accept applications from volunteers after a lengthy process.
