British Museum Specialists Found Remains of Oldest American Wine in a 16th-Century Sherd

On 16th-century shards from the island of Mona, experts from the British Museum and several universities in the UK found the remains of wine.

The samples are the oldest wine discovered by archaeologists in the New World, according to the journal Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences.

The fact that wine was stored in ceramics is evidenced by the presence of tartaric and malic acid. Similar indicators could be present in the dishes in which Indian dates were stored, but they were brought to America later.
