Czech National Bank to Release Commemorative 5,000 Koruna Note with Holographic Feature

Prague,Czech Republic – The Czech National Bank (ČNB) is preparing to issue a special 5,000 kroner banknote to commemorate the 100th anniversary of its founding. This limited-edition note, announced Wednesday, will be fully valid for everyday transactions and marks a first for the country with the inclusion of a holographic overprint.
A Century of Czech Banking
The commemorative banknote is slated for release next year, though the ČNB has not yet specified an exact date. This isn’t the first time the central bank has issued special-edition currency. In recent years,the ČNB has released commemorative banknotes to mark significant milestones in Czech and Czechoslovak history.
In 2019, a 100-crown note was issued to celebrate the centenary of the Czechoslovak crown. Four years later, in February 2023, a 1,000-crown note was released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ČNB and the autonomous Czech currency. Both of these notes remain legal tender but are frequently sought after by collectors and frequently enough sold at a premium by numismatic shops.
Design Details and Security Features
The overprint on the new 5,000-koruna note will be prominently displayed on the face of the bill, positioned below the denomination. The design will incorporate a special logo created by academic painter Jan Solpera, who also designed the font used on Czech banknotes, to honor the 100th anniversary of the NBČ.
Adding to the past importance, the banknote will also feature a portrait of Tomáš Garrigua Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia, and a QR code linking to relevant thematic pages on the ČNB’s website.
Anticipated Release and Distribution
While the ČNB has not yet finalized the exact release date or the total number of notes to be issued, a provisional release is planned around the turn of March and April.This timing coincides with the anniversaries of the founding general assembly of the National Bank of Slovakia and the first meeting of the bank board.
The commemorative banknotes will be available for purchase and exchange at ČNB cash desks located in Prague, Hradec Králové, Brno, and Ostrava. Individuals will be able to exchange existing banknotes and coins totaling 5,000 crowns for the special edition
