More than 5,000 firefighters from Spain will demonstrate in Madrid next Tuesday, May 16, at 4:00 p.m., to request greater coordination in fires and other emergencies, which ultimately ends up “harming citizens”, as denounced in a statement.
They have also indicated that firefighters from the municipalities of all the autonomous communities and from the airports will attend this mobilization en bloc, one of the groups that, they affirm, are the most affected by the current lack of coordination.
Specifically, the protest will begin at the Juan Villanueva Fountain, inside the Parque del Oeste, and will continue the route to Calle Ferraz to end at the doors of the Congress of Deputies where they will raise their petition.
During the tour, the firefighters have announced that they will ask for the approval of a Framework Law that establishes what their functions and powers are, since they have assured that there are currently many autonomous communities that do not have regulations that regulate their activity, which leaves them unprotected to them and to the citizenry.
As the conveners have recalled, due to territorial powers, in the event of a fire, the nearest fire station is not used, which is precisely what they demand, but each zone is assigned to a specific park and its workers can only act within of it, which often causes the fires to advance while the team assigned to that region arrives.
That they all be recognized as public officials
The firefighters also ask that they all be recognized as public officials so that they can act without the direct order of an external command. “If an airplane had to be evacuated, for example, the rescue work for the passengers would have to begin in less than 90 seconds to find them alive, a time that would simply go away in obtaining that permission to act,” they have highlighted.
In addition, they have indicated that firefighters cannot attend accidents that are just a few minutes from their jobs, so if, for example, there were any type of incident in the airport parking lot, the firefighters from these navigation centers they would have to wait for colleagues from abroad to arrive, which can take an average of 25 minutes, while they could arrive at the scene in just four minutes.
In this way, they have detailed that when these scenarios occur, on numerous occasions these workers are forced to break the law to guarantee the safety of people and because their vocation is to save lives even if this means reprimands or exceeding what is legally correct.
On the other hand, the fire brigade asks to shield their condition as firefighters also in case of age, injury or illness, situations that they assure that they occur often and that mean that these professionals, after a lifetime of service, are dismissed in a manner immediately or are forced to retire.
“On May 16 we will take to the streets to put an end to all these Kafkaesque situations that threaten the security of the citizen and against logic. The protection of citizens depends on a law that is blocked and that must be approved before November. Everyone, citizens and firefighters, we are in the countdown”, has defended the president of the Coordination, Israel Naveso.
