This week marks the 53rd anniversary of Bahrain’s independence, a milestone that deserves celebration and remembrance. The British withdrawal in mid-August 1971 ushered in a new era after 150 years of British protection. However, this protection did not foster the establishment of a modern state where the people hold power. Instead, it enabled a hereditary tribal autocracy to maintain absolute dominance, stifling any democratic aspirations.
Despite the Bahrainis’ peaceful nature, their government has engaged in a reign of repression, characterized by ongoing arrests, torture, suppression of religious freedoms, and the rejection of political reform. This atmosphere of suppression confirms three disturbing realities.
First, the government’s reliance on force and oppression to maintain power has failed to foster coexistence with the indigenous population. Despite decades of abuse and persecution, citizens yearn for a political system based on the rule of law and popular participation.
Second, the people’s repeated revolts against their rulers have not been quelled. Their unwavering spirit and sacrifices demonstrate their determination to achieve freedom and establish a democratic political system. Their resilience and persistence are a testament to their commitment to peaceful change.
Third, the Khalifa regime has exhausted its legitimacy through its rampant abuse, persecution, and violation of basic freedoms. Its legitimacy rests on a contractual constitution and free elections, neither of which it has honored. The regime’s failure to deliver on its promises has led to widespread disillusionment and calls for radical reform.
The unwavering spirit of the Bahraini people, their imprisoned representatives, scholars, and youth, has united them in their struggle against tyranny, injustice, and oppression. Their struggle echoes the triumphs of other nations that have fought for freedom, such as South Africa. The people of Bahrain have consistently sought to establish a modern political system that embraces coexistence and equality.
As we commemorate this significant anniversary, we remember the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom over a century ago. Their vision and unwavering spirit continue to inspire generations to fight for dignity, human rights, and a just society. May God support their struggle and bring about lasting change.
