6.5 magnitude earthquake shakes the northeast of the Asian country

by time news

Taiwan entered a state of alert this Sunday, after registering a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in the northeast of that Asian country. According to the meteorological agency, residents indicated that strong tremors were felt in the capital, Taipei.

The epicenter of the earthquake, it was reported, was located in Yilan County. According to official sources, the earthquake occurred at 1:11 p.m. local time, at a depth of 67 kilometers.

Earthquakes are recurrent in Taiwan, since the island is located in the middle of two tectonic plates. The one this Sunday lasted about 10 seconds and, in principle, it would be the strongest among all those registered this year.

Among the main antecedents is a magnitude 7.6 earthquake that took place in September 1999, which killed about 2,400 people, in the worst natural catastrophe in the island’s history.

In 2018, Hualien, a very touristy place, was shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 6.4, which caused 17 deaths and almost 300 injuries. Two years later, a new phenomenon of this type was registered, although of magnitude 6.2, which did not cause injuries or significant damage.
