Cuddalore,

A dam has been built across the Kedilam River in the Nellikuppam area near Cuddalore. Currently, there is some water in the dam due to the summer rains. So it is customary for boys and girls from that area to bathe in this dam.

Accordingly, Priya, a girl from the same area, and students Monisa, Sanghavi, Sumutha, Kavia, Priyadarshini and Navi went to bathe in the block yesterday morning. Then they went down into the deep and drowned.

All the seven drowned were rushed to Cuddalore Government Hospital. But doctors said seven people, including the girls, had already died. Police have registered a case and are conducting further investigations.

President Ramnath Govind has expressed his condolences to the families of those who drowned in the river.

He said in a Twitter post, “The tragic death of seven women by drowning in a river dam near Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu has caused me great sorrow. I offer my deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
