Eight people were killed in a landslide at​ a landfill⁤ in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, city officials said. Foreign media⁣ reports stated that the incident occurred after‍ heavy ⁤rain late ⁣Friday when a section of ⁣the landfill⁢ collapsed, covering nearby houses. The Kampala⁤ Capital ‍City Authority reported that government and‍ Red Cross officials were searching the scene and rescued 14 people during the operation. Their ‍website ‌stated that eight people had been found dead ⁢so far, including six adults and two​ children, with the rescue operation still ongoing.

The landfill, known as Kitezi, ⁢has served as Kampala’s⁣ only ⁤garbage‌ dump for decades and has become a towering hill. Residents have ⁤long complained about its dangers, citing environmental pollution and ⁢safety concerns. Footage showed ⁤people walking over a section of the landfill that had crushed parts of a⁣ house.
