On the outskirts of ten French metropolises, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., more than eight out of ten drivers drive alone in their car according to a study by highway manager Vinci published Tuesday September 19.

In 83.3% of the more than 500,000 vehicles observed between May and June 2023 (excluding school periods) using cameras and counting by artificial intelligence, the drivers were “alone in their vehicle”, according to Vinci. The rate “autosolism” peaks at 87% at 8 a.m. and drops significantly after 9 a.m., reaching 78% at 10 a.m.

Slight decrease

“Despite a growing interest among French people in carpooling, home-to-work journeys are still far too often carried out alone”notes the manager in a press release.

The slight decrease observed compared to the 85% in autumn 2022 remains “insufficient to achieve the objective of 1.75 people on average per vehicle” of the government, explains Vinci. “We should double the number of carpoolers. » The average currently stands at 1.26 people per vehicle, compared to 1.24 in fall 2022.

Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolis

Vinci observed traffic on 18 axes, including on the A10 Île-de-France motorway, where the rate “autosolism” is the lowest (74.5%) and in decline since the previous study. The figure reaches more than 95% on the A7 and the A50 in Marseille as well as on the A11 in Nantes. The A83 in Nantes only has 76% single drivers.

Four sites in the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis (A55, A51, A50 and A7), studied for the first time and with a rate “autosolism” of more than 93%, were not included in the national average to allow comparison with previous editions. The rate of drivers alone in their vehicles is higher than the average of 10 other cities studied, specifies Vinci.

Carpooling bet

As part of ecological planning, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by 2030, the French government is counting, in addition to electric cars, on an explosion in carpooling: while the number of carpooled journeys by day is 21,000 in 2023, it will have to increase to 196,000 in 2030.

The ministries of ecological transition, energy transition and transport announced in December that motorists who start carpooling in 2023 could benefit from a bonus of €100, as part of a €150 million plan. euros in total.
