The highly anticipated gray edition of 8BitDo’s modernized Nintendo 64 controller is once again available for purchase on amazon, launching January 30th for $45. This new iteration faithfully recreates the iconic color scheme of the original N64 controller released in 1996, offering a potent dose of nostalgia for retro gaming enthusiasts.
Originally debuting last august, the 8BitDo 64 Bluetooth Controller quickly gained popularity with its solid black and solid white color options, priced at $40. While the gray edition represents a $5 premium, many will find the authentic aesthetic well worth the extra cost.
Versatile Compatibility Across Modern Platforms
and serves as the official controller for the Analogue 3D, a premium FPGA console capable of playing Nintendo 64 cartridges in stunning 4K resolution. The Analogue 3D, after facing several delays, launched in November and is currently available with white and black console options for $270 directly from Analogue’s online storefront. It’s significant to note that the console is sold without a controller, and the 8BitDo 64 remains the only officially supported wireless option.
A Faithful Recreation with Modern Enhancements
The gray edition’s color palette is virtually indistinguishable from the original N64 controller, featuring the classic Nintendo gray shell complemented by vibrant, colorful buttons. The controller’s input layout includes a Hall Effect Control Stick (Light Gray), a D-pad (Dark Gray), A (Blue), B (Green), C-pad (Yellow), start (Red), L/R shoulder buttons (Dark Gray), L/R Z triggers (Dark Gray), and Select/Star/Home buttons (Light Gray).
A switch on the back of the controller allows users to toggle between S-Input for Nintendo Switch 1/2 and D-Input for other devices, including the Analogue 3D. Further customization is available through the 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2 desktop or mobile app, enabling full control remapping and other adjustments.
Connectivity is achieved via Bluetooth LE (Low Energy) or Bluetooth 5.0, with Bluetooth LE offering extended battery life – up to 36 hours – when used with the Analogue 3D and select newer Android phones. On Nintendo Switch 1/2, users can expect approximately 30 hours of playtime on a single charge. A detachable USB-C to USB-A cable also allows for wired connectivity.
Instead of the original N64’s bulky Rumble pak,the 8BitDo 64 incorporates built-in rumble motors, functional on the Analogue 3D and when playing N64 games through the Nintendo Switch Online app on Switch 1/2.
Ergonomics and Design Refinements
The 8BitDo 64 boasts a contemporary form factor, aligning with the manufacturer’s Ultimate Controller series and the official Switch 1/2 Pro Controllers. While retaining the unique aspects of the original joystick, 8BitDo has focused on improving both the technology and ergonomics. The joystick is repositioned to the left side, and its rubberized texture provides a more comfortable grip than the original N64’s plastic surface.
The controller also features an octagonal stick gate, mirroring the original’s design, and utilizes a Hall Effect sensor to prevent stick drift, along with a wear-resistant metal ring. The classic four-way D-pad remains in its recessed pocket, while the A/B buttons and C-pad maintain the original layout. The R/L shoulder buttons are larger and offer improved feedback, and the N64’s Z button has been replaced with dual Z triggers for enhanced versatility.
additional buttons include start, Minus (select), 8BitDo (home), and Star/Turbo, with turbo functionality offering both standard and auto-turbo modes.Users experiencing syncing issues with Switch 2 or Analogue 3D are advised to ensure the controller is running the latest firmware. For Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, the 8BitDo 64 presents a more ergonomic and affordable alternative to the official N64 Controller.
The 8BitDo 64 controller isn’t just a nostalgic throwback; it’s a thoughtfully designed piece of hardware that bridges the gap between classic gaming and modern convenience.
