After seasons of frustrating detours, “9-1-1” finally appears to be giving Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz a compelling storyline, and a potential love interest that feels genuinely promising.
A Long-Awaited Shift for Eddie Diaz
To say Edmundo Diaz has been adrift for the past few seasons of “9-1-1” would be an understatement. From his needlessly drawn-out detour to Texas, to his bizarre love triangle with Marisol and a woman who resembled Shannon, Eddie has often been relegated to storylines that felt disconnected and unfulfilling. But the January 29 episode signaled a change.
The episode centered around Eddie and Hen testifying in court against parents who had shackled their sick daughter, Abigail, to her bed. Learning that Abigail was struggling to adjust after her escape, Eddie connected her with Alex Doyle (Aimee Teegarden), who had previously assisted with Chimney and Hen’s intervention. Alex, as part of the LAPD’s SMART program (Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team), is positioned to help Abigail, though the young woman initially resisted assistance.
The situation took an unexpected turn when Abigail unexpectedly showed up at Eddie’s apartment, joining him and his son Christopher for a decidedly awkward dinner. She showered Eddie with compliments, questioned him about his relationship with Alex, and even assumed an invitation to stay the night. It quickly became clear that Abigail harbors an obsession with Eddie, and the writers are leaning into a thrilling, twisted storyline reminiscent of the show’s earlier seasons.
Suspicion turned to confirmation when Abigail appeared at Christopher’s school, falsely claiming Eddie had asked her to pick him up. While kidnapping is never condoned, the dramatic move signaled a welcome escalation in the narrative.
Could Alex Doyle Be “The One”?
The prospect of Alex Doyle becoming Eddie’s new love interest is generating excitement among viewers. The casting of Aimee Teegarden, a “Friday Night Lights” alum, was already a positive sign. Pairing Eddie with someone within his professional world feels like a more organic fit than previous romantic interests, Ana and Marisol, who never quite resonated with fans.
What is the LAPD’s SMART program? The Systemwide Mental Assessment Response Team provides specialized support for individuals experiencing mental health crises, offering a crucial link between law enforcement and mental health professionals.
Harry’s First Day on the Job
The January 29 episode also highlighted Harry’s first official day as a member of the 118. Plagued by anxieties about Harry’s safety, Chimney attempted to shield him from all potential dangers, even preventing him from running a simple coffee errand, much to Ravi’s frustration.
Buck, Eddie, and Ravi noticed Chimney’s overprotective behavior and knew Hen was the only one who could offer a dose of reality. Hen delivered tough love, even jokingly comparing Chimney to Gerard. (“The only thing I got from Gerard is mustache envy and a PhD in ‘scrubbing the cr*pper!'” Chimney quipped.) Her point was clear: Harry needed a captain who would teach him how to survive.
Chimney’s fears subsided when Harry bravely saved him from being hit by a car while the 118 responded to a burning garbage truck. The incident marked a turning point for both characters.
Harry’s celebrations continued at home, where Athena and May gifted him Bobby’s old knife, a symbol of mentorship and legacy, and a new knife of his own, encouraging him to forge his own path.
