New coup of the European Union against Iran. The EU foreign ministers have adopted a new round of sanctions against the Iranian regime for the “unacceptable repression of the protests” unleashed after the death of the young Mahsa Amini while in police custody and the human rights situation as well as for Tehran’s cooperation with Russia, which includes the supply of drones used in the war against Ukraine. In total, the Twenty-seven will add the names of another 24 individuals and 5 entities to the sanctioned list.

From the list of those sanctioned, twenty names and one entity correspond to the restrictive measures imposed for human rights violations. “Iran has to understand that the European Union will strongly condemn and take any action we can to support Iranian women, support peaceful protesters and, of course, reject this death penalty,” the head of diplomacy said on Monday. European, Joseph Borrellwho last Friday had a “long” conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, to express European concerns about the recent death sentences.

Those sanctioned include members of Iran’s revolutionary guard responsible for repression and executions and violence against protesters. “It is above all about the Revolutionary Guard, but also about those who, with forced videos, try to intimidate people or punish them,” explained the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, referring to the broadcasting company of the Islamic Republic of Iran. With the inclusion of the new names, the list of affected people now rises to 146 individuals and 15 entities.

Specifically, for its role in the development and delivery of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used by Russia in its war against Ukraine. Those sanctioned include the head of Iran’s air force, a company that makes drone components, and other members of the revolutionary guard. The Board has also indicated its intention to impose restrictive measures against another entity for the same reasons. As in previous sanctions, the measures include the freezing of assets, a ban on travel to the EU and a ban on making funds or economic resources available to the people included in the list.

What the Twenty-seven have not been able to close this Monday is an agreement on the ninth package of sanctions proposed a week ago by the European Commission. Negotiations will continue this Tuesday and Wednesday if necessary with the aim of approving the package this week, before the European Council to be held on Thursday. The proposal, presented on December 7 by the Community Executive, contemplates prohibiting access from Moscow to all kinds of drones, including the possibility of third-party countries such as Iran supplying them, as well as new trade restrictions and sanctions against two hundred individuals and entities, including the russian armed forcesofficials and companies of the defense industrymembers of the State Duma and of the Federation Council, ministersgovernors and political parties.
