UN: UN Member States praised India’s performance as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

India was elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council 2 years ago. It has now completed its tenure this month. India also assumed the monthly presidency of the UN Security Council twice during this 2-year period. India took up this rotational responsibility in August last year and in December this year.

In this case, before the year-end weekend, the meeting of the non-permanent member states of the UN Security Council took place last Thursday. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ruchira Kapoj highlighted the work carried out under the leadership of India in this month.

He pointed to the signature movement on reformed multilateralism and last week’s counter-terrorism drive led by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, the unveiling of a bust of Mahatma Gandhi at the UN, and the launch of the Group of Friends to prevent crimes against peacekeepers.

Thankful Kenya: UN member states and UN Security Council members expressed appreciation for this. Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Martin Kimani, said, “Among the outgoing members of the UN Security Council, India is the only one to have chaired the UN Security Council twice and we are very grateful for India’s efforts and excellent work.”

“Congratulations to India for a very busy month and a successful completion of its leadership,” said Norway’s Permanent Representative Mona Jull.

Russia thanked the Indian delegation for passing numerous resolutions at the UN Security Council this month. “It has been a very productive month under India’s leadership at the UN Security Council,” said Irish Ambassador Fergal Maiden. Similarly, representatives of Mexico, Morocco, Bangladesh and Austria expressed appreciation for India’s activities.
