Karunakaram, Member of Parliament of the Tamil National Federation and General Secretary of the Tamil Eelam Liberation Movement, said that the Tamil National Federation would give full support to the protest and rally to be organized by the University Students’ Union on the 4th, and that all the North East Tamil people should rise up against the Independence Day. Tamil people have not got their freedom yet
Sri Lanka’s 75th Independence Day will be celebrated in February. The government has been celebrating it every year.
But from the day this independence was achieved till today, the Tamil people have been suppressed.
Although this country has got independence, it has not yet got independence as far as the Tamil people are concerned.
This country has been oppressed ever since the Tamil people gained independence and even the lands and territories of the Tamils are being oppressed.
The first Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, DS Senanayaka, had started the Kalloyak Settlement Project in 1949 to transform the Eastern Province from a Tamil province.
Armed struggle
Since then, the successive governments that ruled this country not only created many ethnic conflicts and killed the Tamil people, but also looted the properties of the Tamils.
A massive ethnic riot in 1983 sparked an armed struggle by the Tamils.
Since then, they had been fighting for the independence of the Tamils for a separate country in such a way that they could not live together in this country.
On May 18, 2009, the protest was silenced. But till today Tamil National Federation is struggling democratically and diplomatically to get the rights of our people.
At this time, President Ranil Wickramasinghe has announced in the Parliament and outside that he will give a permanent solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka before the 75th year of Independence Day on the 4th.
Indian pressure
Even provincial council elections, created by the Sri Lanka-India agreement of 1987, have not been held for five years in the east and four years in the north.
In the current political and economic situation, the Sri Lankan government is under pressure, especially India is putting full pressure to fully implement the 13th Amendment Act and all the powers contained in the Act should be properly shared and provincial council elections should be held.
The Minister of External Affairs, who recently came to Sri Lanka, has also emphasized it.
Today, some Sinhalese nationalist forces, especially former ministers like Vimal Weerawansa and Sarath Weerasekhara, are saying that if the 13th Amendment Act is implemented, the country will collapse.
Those who did not oppose the legal source created by GL Peiris and Neelan Thiruchelvam as the Union of Regions during the Chandrika Ammaiyar government which ruled for 10 years from 1994 are today opposing the 13th Amendment Act.
So all in all, when this country is suffering from economic problems, if they do not provide a permanent solution to the ethnic problem in Sri Lanka, there is no chance for this country to be formed.
Protest rally
Therefore, when the upcoming Independence Day is to be celebrated in this country, there is no need to celebrate the Independence Day that we Tamils do not get in a country without independence.
In that way, the students of North Eastern University will hold a protest rally from Jaffna to Batticaloa from North to East on the coming 4th.
In that way, we, the Tamil National Federation, which is united by the Tamil Eelam Liberation Movement, the Tamil Eelam People’s Liberation Association, the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Front, the Tamil National Party, and the Democratic Militants, not only give full support to that rally, but also stand by their side and observe this Independence Day as a black day, and the North East Tamil We request all the speaking people to revolt against this Independence Day”, he said.
