Up to 50,000 dead in Syria earthquake: UN

Ankara: The death toll from the Turkey-Syria earthquake is feared to be close to 50,000, the United Nations World Health Organization has said.

Terrible earthquakes on the Turkish-Syrian border on the 6th were recorded at 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale. It has been officially reported that more than 34,000 people have died in this powerful earthquake so far. Millions of people have lost their homes. As rescue efforts continue for a week, the death toll from the earthquake could rise, the United Nations said.

United Nations President Martin Griffith says, “We still have to go under the rubble. The death toll could approach 50,000. 2.6 crore people were affected by this earthquake. More than 10,000 people are involved in the rescue operation. After the completion of the rescue operations, the next task of the rescue team will be to provide humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake,” he said.

Syria’s civil war and inadequate medical infrastructure have been badly affected by the earthquake. Due to this, international voluntary organizations have requested for help to Syria. Meanwhile, the United Nations has also admitted that there has been a slowdown in the delivery of relief goods to earthquake-hit Syria.
