THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As the Congress Plenary Session is scheduled to begin on Friday, discussions have begun on who will be appointed to the Working Committee from the state. AK Antony, Oommen Chandy and KC Venugopal are members of the working committee from Kerala. Antony and Oommenchandy will leave due to health reasons. KC Venugopal, who played a major role in the success of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, will continue in the working committee. He is likely to continue as secretary in charge of organization. Rahul Gandhi and others want KC Venugopal to continue in this role.

Ramesh Chennithala is likely to fill one of the two vacancies in the working committee. Connections to Chennithala at the national level increase the potential. Experience of working in various capacities at national level is also a positive factor. Many names clamor for the remaining seat. The names of Shashi Tharoor, Mullapally Ramachandran and Kodikunumil Suresh are prominent. Kodikunnil has publicly expressed his desire to join the working committee.

It is not certain whether Tharoor will get a chance as he contested for the post of party president. If Tharoor is not included, the possibility of him contesting cannot be ruled out. Tharoor, who contested for the post of Congress president, got 1072 votes. Tharoor initially responded that he would not contest for the working committee, but after the party’s official announcement, he came to the position that he would respond in this regard. The position of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who was Tharoor’s opponent for the post of president, is also crucial. If KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala reach the working committee, there is a possibility that one person from the minority group will reach the committee. Anthony may be included as an invitee.

The President will nominate 11 of the 23 members of the 25-member working committee, excluding the Congress president and the parliamentary party leader. 12 people will be selected through competition. There has been no competition since 2001. The High Command has no objection to the match taking place. There are 41 AICC members with voting rights from Kerala. Six more MPs were included in the list of parliamentary party representatives and made voting members. Many senior leaders are unhappy with AICC’s membership roll. They point out that they did not even get a place in the invitee list. PCC General Body Members and AICC Members can participate in the Plenary Session.
