In the early hours of February 6, the earth trembled in southeastern Turkey and northern Syria as it had not done in decades, killing more than 46,000 people and injuring tens of thousands. The high intensity of both earthquakes, their location and the power of the aftershocks largely explain the devastation generated, but the quality of the buildings has also been a key factor.
